ABOUT MS. SURDYK
My name is Jackie Surdyk and there has never been a doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a teacher. My mom is a retired teacher, two of my aunts are retired teachers, my late uncle is a retired teacher and football coach, my brother is a teacher, and my sister in law is a teacher. I come from a family of teachers.
I am from Lansing, IL but lived in Charleston, IL from 2010-2019. I met the love of my life, David Campbell, in 2015, and we just got engaged to be married in September of 2020! I moved to Champaign in August of 2019 and I absolutely love it there! I have a chiweenie named Ivy and she is 5 years old. I also have 2 cats--Ziggy, who was born with 3 legs, and Zoey, and a ball python snake named Guinevere . In my free time, I enjoy listening to music or going to concerts, cooking at home or going out to eat, and hanging out with family and friends.
I graduated from EIU in 2012 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, but my path strayed a bit after that. I taught Reading Development at Lake Land College from 2013-2015 for students who needed a stronger foundation in Reading before they took college level Reading courses. At the same time, I was teaching at Sylvan Learning Center of Mattoon and I quickly moved up the ladder. After one year of teaching, I was promoted to assistant director, and 2 weeks after that, I was promoted to director of education of Champaign Sylvan. After 2 years of being the director of education, I was promoted to Executive Director of Mattoon and Champaign Sylvan Learning Centers and I stayed in that position for 3 years. I learned so much about teaching and learning during my time at Sylvan Learning Center and when the pandemic happened, I knew it was my time to help students succeed in school. I thought there might be teachers who wouldn’t be able to teach anymore because of the pandemic, so I finally began my dream of elementary teaching. I teach 5th grade at Broadmeadow and I couldn’t be more happy. Reading is my favorite subject to teach and I am beginning to love SEL at Broadmeadow as well. I can’t wait to see what I learn being a part of the Bobcat family.
